Moving to Sweden with children: family steps that are easy to miss

Hemvia provides general informational planning support. It is not legal, immigration, tax, financial or medical advice. Always verify requirements with the relevant official authority.

Requirements in this area can change. Always verify your specific situation with the official authority.

When you move with children, the family-side steps are easy to lose under everything else. This is an orientation to three of them, each with the authority that decides.

Preschool (förskola). According to Skolverket, municipalities generally must offer preschool (förskola) from age one when guardians work or study; from the autumn term of the year a child turns three, 525 hours per year are free of charge. Fees are set by your municipality, depend on income and are capped by a national maximum rate. Application usually goes through your municipality — verify the local rules and waiting times with your municipality.

Healthcare for the move itself. According to 1177, if you are insured in an EU country, Liechtenstein or Switzerland, you generally pay the same amount for healthcare services as people insured in Sweden when you show a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If you are insured in a Nordic country, 1177 says you show an ID card and give your home address instead. Once you live in Sweden, different rules may apply depending on your registration and insurance situation. Verify your situation via 1177 and Försäkringskassan.

The social insurance system. According to Försäkringskassan, the Swedish social insurance system generally distinguishes residence-based benefits from work-based benefits, and eligibility is generally assessed after you apply. Försäkringskassan, not Hemvia, determines individual entitlement — verify your situation directly with them. Because eligibility is generally assessed only after you apply, it can help to keep this topic visible in your plan.

Why an overview helps. These family steps run in parallel with the personnummer, banking and housing steps, which is why they slip. A plan that keeps them visible — and points each to its authority — is worth more here than any single fact.

Keep the family steps visible alongside everything else.
